Personal Project Exhibition

MY MOTIVATION

&

PERSONAL INTEREST

I chose to pursue this project because I personally love both Music and Visual Arts. I also love listening to music, especially songs that relate to me. I personally, don’t know much about my Indian culture because I was born and brought up in the Netherlands. I never lived in India and I never learned a lot about my Indian culture so by pursuing the project I wanted to learn more about my Indian culture as well as how I can express it through art. I also wanted to learn new art techniques and how to apply them in my own artwork because all of my artworks that I created before pursuing this project was very basic and looked like something a toddler would create. I wanted to make my artwork look more appealing and interesting. In the future, I would like to pursue a career in Business, probably in the marketing field, and in order to be successful in this career, I would need to improve on my creative skills. My personal project really helped me express myself and my culture in an artistic manner which improved my creativity skills.

INSTRUCTIONS & DESCRIPTIONS

PROCESS PLANNING

My initial inquiry question was “How can I express my personality and culture through music and art?”. When I came up with this inquiry question, I thought that it was a great question that covers my personal project as a whole. When I checked it with my mentor for feedback on how I can improve my inquiry question, she said that the question is too specific and doesn’t really sound like a proper IB inquiry question. She suggested changing my inquiry question to “How do I depict music through art?”. This is more of an IB inquiry question and it fits really well with my personal project.

The global context that I chose is Personal and Cultural Expression. I chose this global context because the songs that I chose relate to me personally and I created artworks representing my perspective on the song. I also included elements in all of my artworks that demonstrate Indian culture. For example, colors that have a certain meaning in Indian culture would be used in the artwork to help convey the message of the song.

I did a lot of research on the 3 different art mediums that I used in order to create my 3 artworks (graphite pencil, oil pastels, and acrylic paint) as well as the various art techniques used for these art mediums using mainly websites, articles, books. After that, I did some research on what effects these art techniques have on the viewer and the art piece itself so that I can have an idea of what art techniques I would like to use in my final artworks. In order to find this information, I interviewed my art teacher, Ms. Bronswijk, because she is an expert in this field and I also found more information in various websites, books, and articles. Lastly, I did some research on my Indian cultural background and how I can apply it in my artwork. I interviewed my mother, and I also found some helpful websites and articles that helped me collect a lot of information on this topic.

A few obstacles that I encountered during the investigating phase of my project was that I originally planned to create 3 artworks using 3 mediums which were charcoal, watercolors, and acrylic paint. I already did a lot of research on these mediums and I was already ready to plan my artworks. But then, when I was trying out these mediums I realized that charcoal is a material that smudges a lot and it is quite difficult to create artwork using charcoal, especially since I have absolutely no prior knowledge of it. Instead, I decided to use graphite pencils instead because I have some prior knowledge of using HB pencils since I use it very often. I wanted to learn more about the other types of graphite pencils (2H, 2B, 3H, 3B, etc) and how I can use them in my artwork. I also decided to use oil pastels instead of watercolors because after doing research on their art techniques, I found out that both watercolors and acrylic paints have very similar art techniques. I wanted to learn about a variety of art techniques so I changed it to oil pastels because the art techniques are slightly different and I have hardly used this art medium before. I wanted to learn more about it.

PROCESS TAKING ACTION

The first step I took when putting my research plan into action was making a mind map for each of my artworks. These mind maps helped me with my brainstorming and creative thinking skills because I was able to come up with various ideas as to how I can express the meaning of the song in my artwork and how I can apply the art techniques that I learned about in my art piece. These mind maps also helped me with finding ways on how I can apply the knowledge that I gained from my research to my final product.

When making my products, I came up with a lot of difficulties as to how I could incorporate Indian culture into my graphite pencil sketch. This is because, during my investigation phase, I did a lot of research on colors and what each color represents in Indian culture. Since my sketch does not include any colors, I struggled with trying to come up with elements that represent the Indian culture without using color symbolism. Before creating my sketch artwork, I did a lot of research on what Indian people would usually do if they feel like they are all alone and nobody is listening to them. I also applied a lot of my creative and out-of-the-box thinking skills that I developed throughout my personal project in order to come up with an idea. Luckily, I thought of drawing hands praying because many Indian people are religious and whenever they have no one to talk to, they pray to God. The other sketches that I made in this artwork, also represent Indian culture because many Indian people also play/listen to music when they feel alone/abandoned.

Story

This artwork and song is about a time in Demi Lovato's life when she felt like she was all alone. She had no one to talk to because no one would listen to her. She would scream her heart out and cry for help. Music was the only thing that helped her through this time period. She would talk to her piano and guitar because she couldn't talk to anyone else.

Personal Expression

This song relates to me because I am a very quiet person and sometimes when I need help, nobody listens to me. I feel stuck and invisible. Music is something that I love and I always listen to it, especially when I feel down. I also play the piano. It makes me feel much better and calms me down.

Cultural Expression

In Indian culture, many people are religious. When they feel like they have no one talk to, and they just want to talk to someone, they pray to God. I also pray to God when I want to talk to someone. Music is also something very important in Indian culture. It's a way of expressing yourself and a way of making you feel calm.

Story

This artwork and song is about how a girl puts a lot of pressure on herself. She tries to be perfect and happy all the time but that's not possible. It's okay to have mental breakdowns, cry and let it all out. The different colors show that there are many sides to a human which makes each person unique.

Personal Expression

This song relates to me because I always put so much pressure on myself and I try to be happy all the time but sometimes I just can't take it anymore and I start crying. I also put so much pressure on myself to have good grades and then I stress out too much, causing me to have a mental breakdown. I made this artwork to inform me as well as others that it's okay to be sad and start crying. That's what makes us human. Our ugly sides to ourselves make us who we are.

Cultural Expression

India is a country that believes that every color represents a different feeling/emotion. In Indian culture, the color black represents evil and negativity. On the right side of my artwork, the color black is blended with the other darker colors symbolizing that humans can also be evil and negative.  Bright colors like green, yellow, orange, blue, and pink represent happiness and joy. Humans feel happy and joyful most of the time. That's why the majority of the artwork is filled with these bright colors. When you zoom into the light blue area on the picture of my artwork, you can see sgraffito of Mandala. Mandala is something that many Indian's draw when they want to relieve stress and feel better. Not only does it make you feel calmer, but you are also able to create a beautiful art piece.

Story

This artwork and song is about sometimes the world can be so toxic and it feels like hell because of how much hate there is around us. Occasionally I wonder if it's possible to go somewhere else, a sweeter place which is like heaven. No hate, and full of peace. Above the clouds full of flowers and candy.

Personal Expression

This song relates to me because many times, I feel like I want to escape because of the amount of hate that is going on as well as the stress that makes me feel like I am turning into an angry devil. From time to time I imagine my dream place where I can escape to. It would be full of the things I love and it would be so peaceful. I love flowers and sweet things. That's why I included a lotus and candy. The clouds are also supposed to resemble pink candy floss.

Cultural Expression

In Indian culture, the color orange represents purity and holiness. That's why I made the color of the peace sign orange. Green, yellow and pink represents peace, happiness and celebration. The red color represents several emotions. In this artwork, red represents violence and disruption. The black color represents evil, darkness, anger, and negativity. That's why I chose to paint the color of the background of hell, black. The lotus is also the national flower of India.
